How To Turn An Old Frame Into A Pretty Fall Wreath

How To Turn An Old Frame Into A Pretty Fall Wreath

Do you have an old, pretty frame that you don’t know what to do with?! Here I’ll show you how to transform it into the perfect wreath for your home… With a little bit of paint, sandpaper, ribbon, and foliage, the transformation will be gorgeous!

So how did the inspiration for this project come about?! Well let me tell you…

It started out at a really neat flea market in Perth, Ontario. My parents always take me antique shopping whenever I am done to visit, and had been talking about going to this place for a while… We finally made it there, and let me tell you, this place did not disappoint! The inventory was extensive, and the prices were right on point!

The pretty frame that I started out with actually a mirror in it when I purchased, and I actually didn’t even notice the mirror, and walked right by it. My dad was the one who saw it first and pointed it out to me. My mom also really liked it when she saw it, so we had to fight over it!

Somehow, I won! 😉

It was pouring rain when we left, so we quickly packed everything in the truck, and my mom ended up holding the mirror on her knee int the front seat. We stopped for gas, and the mirror was placed on the dash… Then when pulling out into the busy traffic, the mirror was forgotten on the dash, and flew off of it and smashed! Oops!

My mom felt so bad and really wanted to replace the mirror for me, but it was actually the smashed mirror that gave me the inspiration for this wreath! It totally meant to happen! 😉

To make this wreath:

I started out by removing the broken mirror from my frame. Since this frame was so intricately carved, I used the air compressor to remove all of the dust from the cracks and crevices.

Next, I did a really light coat of white-wash on the frame. The white-wash looked a little more on the grey side when applied to the frame, because the original color was so dark… But I’m totally ok with how the color turned out. 🙂

To help bring out the character of the frame, I did a little bit of sanding to get that slightly distressed look.

Next I added a burlap bow, and some foliage.

Here is how this pretty fall wreath turned out! I hung it on the closet door in our bedroom to take photos, and I love looking at it so much when I wake up in the morning, that it’s still there, instead of on my front door!

  1. Wow, I would have never thought about turning a broken mirror into a wreath. It’s beautiful and I definitely will remember that if I ever break a mirror or see a broken one at a garage sale.

    • Hi Bobbie, The name of the store is Gore St. Antique Flea Market… 147 Gore St E, Perth, ON K7H 1J8. Amazing place, and absolutely huge! Don’t be fooled by the size of the outside main building… Once inside it seems almost endless!
