Sometimes it can be hard to find the perfect hardware for whatever gorgeous project you are working on… Here, I will show you how to save money by transforming your already existing, ugly hardware into something fresh and new that you will love!
About a month ago, I purchased an old china cabinet from the 1970’s to makeover and sell. My husband did not like it. He took really fast corners on the way home, hoping it would fall out of the back of the truck… But it didn’t!
I’ve been slowly making it over for weeks, just painting a little bit here and there, whenever I could. It took a few coats of paint along with some sanding and distressing.
After the cabinet itself was finished, I started trying to decide what type of hardware I would like to put on it, since I really wasn’t digging the original brass hardware.
In my mind I had pictured teal/bluish glass or crystal knobs… Something like these ones from Amazon. I travelled to a total 8 different stores here in Chatham, and I could not find any in that color.
I know that I could have ordered them on line, or travelled to a larger nearby city, but I really did not want to waste any more time on tracking down knobs. So instead, I decided to give the original brass hardware a little make over too!
This ended up being the quickest process ever, and I really love how the hardware is still original to the cabinet.
Here is what the knobs looked like to start out:
Not super ugly or anything, but not quite just right…
I started the transformation by applying some teal/bluish paint to my knobs. I just kind of dry-brushed it on randomly.
After I let it dry, I applied some white paint in the same manner… Just a quick, random dry-brush technique.
I waited for the white paint to dry, and then I took some medium-grit sandpaper and lightly sanded off some patches of paint on each knob and handle. Again just randomly, to give it a rustic and distressed look, like the actual cabinet.
Here is how they turned out in the end:
Much better, right?!

Beautiful! Can we see the entire cabinet? Or is it because I am viewing on a mobile phone?
