Chalk Paint – Tried & Tested (I finally did it!)

2

So, I did it! I finally broke down and bought some of Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint… So what did I think? Would I do it again? And most importantly, would I recommend it?

When it comes to crafting & DIY-ing, one of my main goals is to cut costs wherever possible, and painting furniture was definitely one of those items always up on the chopping block… Why would I buy special paint when I could just go out to my trusty garage and mix up some kind of creative concoction to get the job done? Well, chalk paint has been all of the rave lately, and I have a couple of friends who swear by it, so I finally decided to throw in the towel and try it!

And — dun, dun, dun… the results are in! I love, love, love it! And here are the reasons why:

  1. First of all, the color selection is amazing! They have a large variety of main colors to chose from, and then by mixing these you can easily create a whole new set of colors!
  2. It only took me two coats of paint for sufficient coverage. Yes — I said, TWO COATS!
  3. The piece that I painted was about 14 square feet, and I only used about 1.5 inches of paint out of the can! This fact significantly reduces the price-point of chalk paint. You will be able to paint A LOT of pieces from just one can!
  4. Chalk Paint can be used on a large variety of surfaces, ranging from wood and metal all of the way to plastic and fabric!
  5. NO PRIMING or SANDING required! Just another great benefit… (Just remember to use a little common sense with this one… Do not paint over peeling or flaking paint. Just give it a real quick sanding or wire-brushing first!)
  6. There are several different finishes that can be easily achieved with chalk paint. (Chippy-Rustic Look, Smooth Modern Finish, Two-Color Distressing and the Simple Vintage Look!)
  7. Chalk paint  has two different waxes to choose from to finish off your masterpiece, a clear wax or a dark wax… another super-feature of chalk paint — getting so many completely different looks out of the same can of paint!
  8. This wonderful product can also be used as an interior or exterior paint!
  9. I was able to use the dark wax instead of a stain to accentuate the grain in my unpainted wood — So easy!

So, in summary, if you have been contemplating Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint — I say… GO FOR IT! You will LOVE it! 🙂

Pretty Fall Foliage for Free!

2

This sudden turn of beautiful Fall weather has been not only super-refreshing, but super-inspiring as well! Last night, I decided to go for a walk to see what type of Fall foliage I could scrounge up for a lovely, homemade centerpiece… and boy, did I hit the jackpot or what?! The best part about my centerpiece is that it was free, and you know, I think it kind of looks super-professional, and I am super-proud of it! 😀

Every single piece of foliage used here is one — a weed and two — out of a ditch! Ditches are the best place to find a wide assortment of different plants, because lets face it, everything needs water to grow! See the big poofy-ball-thingies in the picture below, those are dried out thistle-heads… Pretty cool!
IMG_20151001_085103-2

One major faux pas that I made, was that I forgot to wear gloves… So picking those thistle-heads was slightly painful, but well worth it! Other than remembering gloves, make sure that you also watch out for poison ivy and poison sumac… both can appear quite pretty, but they are just trying to trick you! Stay far, far away!

IMG_20151001_085208I hope that you have enjoyed this post and now feel inspired to create your own Pretty Fall Foliage centerpiece! Enjoy!

Creating The Perfect Nursery For Your Little One!

Feature ImageCreating the nursery for your little one may sometimes seem overwhelming as you want everything to be just perfect! But it doesn’t have to be that way! It can really be made super simple, by simply just knowing where to start!

The first major steps to planning the perfect nursery are to pick colors and a theme…. yes there are soooo many choices out there…. How do you choose the right one??! Well…. I happened to stumble upon my theme by taking a trip to the local fabric store for something completely unrelated to the nursery!

While at the fabric store, I decided to take a stroll through the baby/kids’ fabric section, saw this beautiful John Deere green and pink fabric, and instantly fell in love! I immediately bought all of the fabric that was in stock on the spot! So if you are having trouble selecting the perfect theme for your nursery, I definitely recommend taking a stroll through your local fabric store! Whether you are looking for a boy, girl, or neutral theme, they will have LOTS of options to choose from!4As luck would have it, my super-talented Momma can sew! So she was able to make a beautiful quilt, a matching window valance, and a change table skirt!1So, since I was so easily able to stumble across my nursery theme, you might think that choosing the colors for the nursery was just as simple…. and guess what… it was! So how did I decide to paint the walls green and not pink, or white, or grey? I went out to my garage to see what I already had, and there just happened to be a can of green paint in stock — TOTAL SCORE!!! Well, almost total score… I only had enough paint to do three of my nursery walls… so, how did I choose the second color for the fourth wall? I went back out to the garage to check my stock pile, and found this nice neutral beige! To help tie it in and dress it up a little, I painted my special baby-to-be’s name and added a floral mural of the different colors of the nursery.2When decorating a room, I always like to do it “on a dime” and keep the budget to a minimum. To do this I like to have a nice combination of new and old. A trick that I use to ensure that all of my new and old objects go together, is to use many different shades of the same color.8The crib and change table were actually mine as a baby! The rocking chair is an antique from my parents farm, that I painted white and reupholstered, with super thick cushions, since I would be spending a lot of my future time in it! 😉 The ballerina teddy bear picture was also mine as a little girl, I just put it in an antique frame that I got for $2 at a yard sale and painted white.6For the mobile, I took and old used one and covered it in pink fabric. I then made little shapes, (a star, heart, tractor, butterfly and flower) out of left over material scraps. And then my crafty Momma had the brilliant idea to cover mini-canvases (from the Dollar Store) with matching fabric.<3 10And then on one special day, along came my very special, baby-girl, Miss Lacee Grace! <3 I couldn’t be more happy with how this beautiful nursery turned out!

Autumn Harvest Barn Wedding!

Having grown up on a farm, when the opportunity to have an Autumn Harvest Barn Wedding came my way — I couldn’t have been more ecstatic! Yes, I had an October wedding…. and yes it ended up being freezing cold! But that aside, it was absolutely perfect and I wouldn’t change it for the world!Barn2My husband and I were also lucky enough to have very gracious family friends who not only lent us decorations, but helped decorate the barn for us…. The results were not only breath-taking, they were more than we could have dreamed of!
barn5Cream roses and beautiful golden sunflowers were used for our bouquets and table settings, and I couldn’t be more happy with how everything turned out!dWe chose gold and a mossy green for our wedding colours, with cream as our base. My super-talented momma hand-painted sunflowers on 186 wine glasses as special gifts for our wonderful guests!bWe used straw bales to decorate the loft as a photo booth for our guests, and the pictures turned out fabulous! cIf you are considering tying the knot and love the fall as much as I do, I highly recommend going for the Autumn Harvest Barn Wedding!

DIY Rose Petal Air Freshener In A Mason Jar

6I recently celebrated my birthday — 29 and Feelin’ Fine! And to my amazement… My husband actually bought me flowers! [Side Note: Guys, if you’re reading this, buy your lady some flowers! Seriously, on any day — it will make her day! Or even pick some! LOL] They were beautiful red roses and they smelled so amazing, that when they started to wilt about a week later, I thought to myself — How can I make these last longer?! So, this is what I came up with! Not only does it smell SO good, it took like 10 minutes to make! Seriously! 😀

Step 1: The first thing that I did was remove the rose heads from the stems. Then I used my trusty Uloo and an old cutting board to chop them up.

Step 2: Next, I sprinkled some regular old table salt onto the chopped up rose petals. I then placed them into my mason jar.

Step 3: I then doubled up a small piece of tulle, covered the jar opening, screwed on the lid, and then trimmed the edges that poked out. I them wrapped a small string of pearls around the neck of the jar for “garnish”!

That’s it! Super easy & Super cute! Remember to give your Air Freshener a little shake every once in a while to revive the beautiful aroma! And, if you liked this post, you will LOVE my good friend Courtenay’s DIY Mercury Glass Mason Jar Air Freshener!

The Flyest Fruit Fly Trap Ever! – [Dr. Sista-Thang-Says!]

1Guess what…. I can actually buy fruit now! I no longer have to worry about those super-annoying, super-gross fruit flies! (And yes, I actually quit buying fruit because of this!) — My Sista-Thang actually passed this one on to me, and it works soooo good! Thanks SO much Michelle, for sharing this awesome secret with us! 🙂

What you’ll need:

– 1/4 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar

– 1 Tspn of Dish Detergent

– 1 Glass

– Saran Wrap

All you need to do is mix the Apple Cider Vinegar with the Dish Detergent in the glass. Next cover the glass with Saran Wrap and poke some holes in it. And — That’s it! (Seriously!)

How it works: The Apple Cider Vinegar attracts the pesky fruit flies into the glass through the holes in the Saran Wrap. Once the fruit fly is in there the Dish Detergent weighs the little guy down, and the sucker is TRAPPED! Yes! Awesome! 🙂

Double-Baked-SMASHED! Potatoes

Double-Baked-SMASHED! Potatoes — Prep Time: 60 minutes, Bake Time 20 min

These Double-Baked-Smashed!-Potatoes are probably my most favorite  BBQ/dinner side! Not only are these potatoes super yummy, they are also very simple to make…. Just follow the recipe below for detailed instructions, and enjoy! 🙂

All you’ll need is:

  •  8 Potatoes
  •  1 package of Cream Cheese
  •  1 small Onion, chopped
  •  1/8 cup of Ranch Dressing
  •  1 1/2 cups of Cheddar Cheese, shredded
  •  1 Tbsp. of Margarine or Butter
  •  1/4 cup of Milk or Cream
  •  1/4 Tsp. of crushed Garlic
  •  1/2 package of diced, cooked Bacon or Bacon Bits
  •  Dash of Salt & Pepper
  •  Fresh Chives for garnish

Step One: Wash and slice all of the potatoes in half, the long way. Place all potato halves face down on a baking sheet. Cover the bottom of the baking sheet with 1cm of water, and bake in the oven for 45 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tip: If you are worried about the potatoes sticking, cover the baking sheet with a light coating of vegetable oil or butter.

Step Two: After potatoes have been baked and cooled to touch, use a spoon to carefully scrape out the potato skins into a large bowl.

Step Three: Add the milk and butter to the potatoes, and mash as you would in order to make “regular” mashed potatoes.

Tip: Reheat the mixture in the microwave to help with mashing.

Step Four: Set aside 1 cup of cheese and 1/2 of the bacon. Mix and mash — (or SMASH!), all of the other ingredients into the bowl, (except for the chives).

Step Five: Spoon the mashed potato mixture back into the potato skins and place them back on to the cookie sheet. Next sprinkle the remaining cheese and bacon on top.

Tip: I like to pre-mix the bacon and cheese in a separate bowl before sprinkling it onto the potatoes. This helps to ensure and even-distribution to each potato!

Step Six: Place the potatoes back into the oven bake for about 20 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, or until the cheese is melted on top.

Step Seven: Sprinkle fresh chives on top, serve with sour cream, and enjoy!

Poison Ivy – What You Need To Know!

Poison Ivy - What You Need To Know!

Have you had Poison Ivy before? Ever wonder how it works, why does it keep coming back, and is there any relief from the horrible itch?! Here is a complete guide to help answer these questions for you!

Poison Ivy… the shear thought of it just makes my skin itch!

If you have ever had Poison Ivy, than you know what I am talking about… but if you haven’t, it is almost impossible to imagine — So please, consider yourself lucky! 🙂

Unfortunately, Poison Ivy grows just about anywhere, and can actually come in many different shapes, sizes, and forms… sometimes making it easily mistaken as something else…

Poison Ivy - What You Need To Know!

It also looks different throughout each of the 4 seasons, whether it be a 3-leafed plant, a leafy vine, an empty vine, a plant or vine with or without berries, or colored red, brown, green, shiny, not shiny, jagged leaves, or smooth leaves….

So confusing right?!

The best way to deal with Poison Ivy is to be aware of what it is and where it grows — and STAY AWAY!

Poison ivy is so EVIL!

I remember getting poison ivy when I was a child, and it was so horrible, but it wasn’t until my adult life now, that I have become severely allergic to it and now have systematic reactions lasting for months… Absolutely terrible!

Poison Ivy is so potent, that believe it or not, there are more ways to catch it than just one…

If you do notice that you have come in to contact with the plant right away, try washing your hands immediately. Use lots of soap and scrub for at least 5 minutes. Also be sure to scrub down anything that you may have touched on your way to the sink… The faucet taps, the door knob, etc.

NOT SURE OF HOW TO IDENTIFY POISON IVY?! MY FRIEND COURTENAY FROM OVER AT THE CREEK LINE HOUSE HAS A REALLY GREAT GUIDE TO HELP YOU!

How to Identify Poison Ivy

DIFFERENT WAYS TO CATCH POISON IVY:

  • The most obvious way, touching the plant itself. Whether you touch a leaf, vine, or berry, you are most likely going to contract poison ivy.

  • If you are digging in the dirt, you can also catch poison ivy from the root system growing under the ground. Trust me, I learned this one the hard way!

  • On a hot and muggy day, poison ivy can also travel through the air… Pretty scary and strong stuff, right?!

  • Burning poison ivy is also a really nasty way to contract it… The smoke and fumes can actually cause an allergic reaction within the lungs and throat, causing a dire respiratory emergency!

HOW DOES POISON IVY WORK, AND WHAT MAKES IT SO POTENT?

The actual organic substance that causes the allergic reaction among more than half of the human population is known as Urushiol, (pronounced Yoo-roo-she-all).

Urushiol is such an extremely determined and evil substance, it can remain on an object once it has been touched, for years later!

This makes it important to wash any tools, clothes and body parts vigorously with an oil-deterring detergent (like dish-soap or shampoo), that have come into contact with the substance. And washing only once may not cut it…

Studies have shown that Urushiol is such a strong oil, that it may take up to 10 washes or more to fully remove it from your body!

Another thing to keep in mind is that Urushiol can be contracted through your pets as well! Eeek!

POISON IVY CONTROVERSY:

Poison Ivy - What You Need To Know!

Throughout my research to find that instant Poison Ivy relief, it has become quite apparent that Poison Ivy is still to this day a controversial topic….

Is it contagious to others? Can it still spread among your own body? Can it travel through your blood system?

Unfortunately I cannot answer these questions 100% accurately, but I can give a detailed account of my own personal experience…

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH POISON IVY:

Studies say that once the Urushiol has been properly removed from your body that the Poison Ivy is no longer contagious to yourself or others…. However, while I find the first to be false, I find the later to be true.

In my experience, poison ivy has not spread to any others (friends nor family) that I have been among (thank goodness!!!), but it has continued to spread all over my body long after contracting it…

POISON IVY CONCLUSIONS – FACT OR MYTH?

Some medical professionals will argue that I am still somehow coming into contact with the Urushiol through clothes or tools, etc… Although I am confident that this is NOT the case!

Other medical professionals believe that poison ivy can travel through your bloodstream… This has been my proved fact in my opinion, through my own personal allergic reactions.

There is also part of the population that will argue that if poison ivy has previously been in your system, it will reoccur in these areas whether or not they have been in direct contact with the Urushiol once again.

IS THERE ANY RELIEF FROM POISON IVY ITCH?

If you do your research, you will mind that there are many different methods to try to relieve the horrible itch… Some may work for you, and some may not. Some I would recommend trying, and others, I definitely would not!

Below you will find a list of each method tried, an opinion on whether or not I would recommend the method, and an actual rating for itch relief on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the most relief.

NOTE: Please remember that I am not a doctor, and the below is based off of my opinions and experiences, and shall not replace the advice of your professional medical provider.

A LIST OF POISON IVY RELIEF METHODS – TRIED & TESTED:

1. Get to the Dr.’s IMMEDIATELY and get your hands on either some prednisone pills or cortisone cream! DO NOT WAIT! GO! These two things have been known to stop Poison Ivy in it’s tracks. – Recommended – Unrated.

2. Take an Antihistamine (such as Benadryl). Recommended – Unrated.

3. Take a Histamine Blocker (such as Zantac). Recommended – Unrated.

4. Calamine Lotion – Recommended – When it comes to Poison Ivy, Calamine Lotion is the automatic go-to… but does it actually work?

Not really… I give it a relief rating of about 3.5 when you are applying the lotion, and as soon as it dries, you are left with dry, scaling, just as itchy skin. However, it does help dry the rash out.

5. Vinegar – Recommended – Try pouring vinegar (regular or apple) onto the affected area and let it air-dry.

This method scores about a 4 on the relief scale…. being that it will take the itch out and replace it with a temporary sting for about 5 minutes. This method kind of works, but who has time to stand there and pour vinegar on their self all day??!

6. Baking Soda – Recommended – Mix baking soda with water to create a paste and apply to the affected area.

With a relief rating of 6, this can be considered one of the better methods, however it is extremely messy! And as soon as the paste dries, it starts crumbling off, and the temporary relief ceases.

7. Bleach, Javax or Rubbing Alcohol – NOT Recommended! – The theory behind this method is that it will get rid of any Urushiol left on your skin and stop the spread…

However, not only does it NOT WORK, it is also EXTREMELY BAD FOR YOUR SKIN!

And yes, as desperate as I am, I did try it – several times :s and it did not work… the Poison Ivy still continued to spread.

8. Oatmeal or Milk Bath – Recommended – Soaking in either an oatmeal or milk bath can definitely bring temporary relief to the terrible suffering of one covered in Poison Ivy.

I give either of these two methods a relief rating of 6, due to the fact that they are soothing and calming to your skin, but once again, only temporary. (If you are thinking of trying this method, try my DIY Cinnamon-Vanilla Milk Bath!)

9. The Volcano Method – Recommended – Remember when you were in grade-school, and you did the ultimate mother of all science projects — the Erupting Volcano!?

Well, I decided to mix methods 2 & 3 together, with a little water… and this is what I came up with: In a big tub, sink, or bowl, fill with cold water, add 1/6 proportion of vinegar, and sprinkle in a couple of tablespoons of baking soda.

While soaking the affected area, the fizzing bubbles feel SO good! And even after patting dry, I experienced Poison Ivy Relief anywhere from 1/2 and hour to two full hours! This method gets a two-thumbs-up 8!

10. A535 Ice Gel – Recommended – A thought that came to mind was: Is it possible to numb this unbelievable, indescribable itch?! And the answer is YES!

A535 Ice Gel will give you temporary relief, for almost 20 minutes, to half an hour! Small peas, right? — Well not really… when you are suffering from Poison Ivy, just 5 minutes of temporary relief can be HUGE! So for this reason, A535 Ice Gel also gets a rating of 8.

I hope that at least one of these methods brings some kind of relief to you! And if you have any suggestions or methods yourself, I would love to hear them!
